Prabhakar Kolte

Prabhakar Kolte (born 1946) is one of India's foremost abstract painters. He received his diploma from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai in 1968 and subsequently taught at the institute between 1972 and 1994, mentoring generations of modern and contemporary painters.

Kolte’s artistic trajectory reflects a deep affinity for color field abstraction and textural interplay, drawing early conceptual inspiration from Swiss modernist Paul Klee. The defining hallmark of Kolte’s work is the atmospheric mystery permeating his canvases—built through successive layers of paint, scraped textures, and gestural color juxtaposition.

His masterworks have been exhibited globally in landmark shows including Three Artists in Hong Kong (1995), Galerie Foundation for Indian Artists in Amsterdam (1996), and Six Indian Painters curated by Geeta Kapur in Yugoslavia, Ankara, and Istanbul (1985). Today, Kolte’s paintings occupy an eminent place in premier public and private contemporary collections worldwide.
