Jyoti Swaroop

Jyoti Swaroop (1939 – 2009) was born and brought up in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Throughout his prolific career as an active free-lance artist, he established a singular vocabulary within twentieth-century Indian modernism.

When Rajasthani art seemed to be oscillating between traditional folk expressions and courtly miniature styles, Swaroop liberated it by contouring regional sensibilities with his own deep geometrical and Tantric abstractions. His works explore the elemental pulse of nature (Prakriti and Purusha), capturing the mystical vibrance of desert landscapes, cosmic geometry, and expressive figuration.

Working across diverse mediums including oil on canvas, delicate watercolours on paper, mixed media, and relief woodworks, Swaroop continued to refine the contemporary art scene in Rajasthan and national academies until his demise in 2009. Today, his masterpieces are preserved in prominent public museums, corporate collections, and private connoisseur archives worldwide.
