TATA Textiles: Launched in October 1970, this ad endorses printed poplin fabric manufactured in-house by the TATA Textile Mills. Though textile production was a specialty for TATA; they were the biggest producers of cotton textiles in India at one point, by the end of the 80s they departed from the textile industry. This ad was circulated at the peak of their popularity in a fairly young, independent India, a nation whose prime objective was to become economically self-sufficient. So TATA’s advertising strategy in the 19th century focused solely on this, how they contributed to the cardinal cause of nation-building and self-reliance: their role in fostering Swaraj.
